The Old Face Of Futura

Concept

This book is a cellebration of the old face of futura. I found that the old letter ‘g’ resembled a face and so decided to incorporate the idea of 'the old face of futura' on the cover. Also, the letter ‘g’ was the one letter that Renner had most dificulty designing so was the most significant letter in the typeface. I played around with various ways ofusing the letter but settled on punching the shape of the letter through the front cover so that when the cover was shut, the ‘g’ was visible.
Although Renner was not directly afflicted with the bauhaus, his work strongly resembled its style. I was interested in the way that the typeface was geometrically created using circles, triangles and squares and so wanted to use this idea on the cover. Kandinsky’s theory represents each shape as a different colour claiming the colours compliment the shape; Triangle: yellow, Square: red and Circle: blue. It was because of this I decided to use the colours on the front cover, highlighting the geometric shapes within the typeface.
I then transfered this geometric idea into the book and made a master grid using circles, triangles and squares, as I found it fitting to ‘geometrically’ create the book, like the typeface was ‘geometrically’ designed.
The end result is a geometrical book designed in the stlye of Paul Renner and the Bauhaus.

One Seventeen

Above is the Oneseventeen business cards, letterhead and complement slip.

Then the interactive website. The logo flickers as the user navigates around the website.

For the poster, I reversed some dingy sailing images I had through the blown up logo, focusing on the different coloured sails in the images. This makes the image visible from a distance but just a colourful collage up close making the poster intriguing.

One Seventeen is a brand new high performance sailing brand aimed to bring sailors high tech, top of the range equipment to boost personal performance. The market they want to be selling their products to is the competitive dingy sailing market.
Our brief was to research into competitive sailing and brand this new, up and coming company. Mark and Laurence, the founders of the company, feel that there is a gap in the sailing market for high performance equipment and want to provide sailors with high end, scientifically tested and proved gear.
I took this idea and looked into the science side of the company, after a bit of research I found that the periodic table had recently been completed. In April 2010 the last element of the periodic table had been found. Element One Seventeen (ununseptium). I decided to use this scientific concept of the company filling a gap in the sailing market and One Seventeen filling the last gap in the periodic table. And so I called the company One Seventeen.
The company logo comes from the electronic structure of this new element. I decided to use a pantone blue to relate the company to the sea. The logo and concept is used across everything, from being interactive on the website, to splitting through the business cards, blown up with an image inside for the posters and changes colour for product labels depending on whether the product keeps you warm or cold.

Radio 4 News animation

This is the flash animation I made in first year for BBC RADIO 4 NEWS. I made it on flash (never again) which proved to be a hideously awequard programme to use, and even though I made everything the way I should have, Flash still added in some jumps and pauses of its own...

La Sagrada Familia word mark

Above is my wordmark inspired by 'La Sagrada Familia'. We were given the brief to create a wordark, typeface and promotional material inspired by a historic landmark.

To the left is my Antoni Gaudi inspired typeface. Gaudi often used twisted forms inspired by nature to construct his buildings. I used the type face 'Gil Sans' and twisted it by splitting each letter into two, which other way looked best, and flipping one half of the image over. I overlaid my new typeface on a copy of original 'Gil Sans' to increase legibility.

P.O.S.H magazine

This is an old first year project. We had a brief to design a local magazine for Plymouth. I decided to base the magazine on Plymouth's boat scene as it is a huge influence on the infrastructure of the city both historically and now. We were asked to brand the magazine and make the first issue with a cover, contents page and an article that ran retro, spread, verso.
I called the magazine POSH, as the word posh is thought to have derived from the 1800's where the rich would sit on the port side of the boats on the trading routes to Africa and the starboard side on the way back in order to catch the sunrise in the morning. Port Out Starboard Home.
This also pushed me try to give the magazine a 'posh' feel in the way it is laid out and presented.
I based the article on 'Plymouth Race Week' which is due for the first time in the summer of 2011 and will be a landmark event for Plymouth, bringing in spectators and competitors from around the globe.
